Byze (Βυζη) whose name means "Close-Pressed" was one of four Naiad nymphs born to the river god Erasinos in Argolis (southern Greece). They welcomed the goddess Britomartis into their country when she arrived from Krete (Crete).
"[Britomartis] arrived in Argos from Phoinikia (Phoenicia) [i.e. Lebanon], entering into the company of the daughters of Erasinos; Byze, Melite, Maira & Ankhiroe. Then she went from Argos to Kephallenia . . . Then she went to Krete."
