Chronos was the personification of time that created the four initial states of matter along with his consort, Ananke, goddess of inevitability.
- Ananke (Consort)
He is commonly depicted as an incorporeal god in serpentine form, with three heads (bull, man, and a lion). Him and his consort Ananke were both depicted as snakes, encircling the world egg that held everything in existence. When in his human form, he is shown as an old, bald man with a gray beard. He is also shown with wings, which influenced the saying "time flies".
- Chronology, chronometer, chronic, chronicle, and anachronism are all derived from him.
