Daedalus and Icarus, by van Dyck

Daedalus and Icarus

Icarus was the human child of Daedalus.

Myth

Imprisonment

Daedalus built the Labyrinth under the castle of King Minos in Crete. This was created to hold the Minotaur, and as a challenge to kill Theseus, enemy of Minos. Daedalus gave Ariadne a ball of string, so she would give it to Theseus to get through the Labyrinth. Because of this, Daedalus and his son Icarus were thrown into the Labyrinth. The two escaped, and were thrown into a high tower prison.

Death

Daedalus created a pair of wings, fastened with candle wax. He melted them onto Icarus' and his backs. Icarus was told to wait, but he flew out of the area anyway. Daedalus warned him not to fly to close to the sun, but Icarus ignored him. He floated up, until the sun's heat melted wax and left him falling into the earth, killing him.

In another version of the myth, Icarus was killed by getting to close to the water, caused the wings to get soggy and make him drown.
