Tisiphone, or Tilphousia, was one of the Erinyes or Furies, and sister of Alekto and Megaira. She was the one who punished crimes of murder: parricide, fratricide and homicide. In Book VI of Virgil's Aeneid, she is described as the guardian of the gates of Tartarus, 'clothed in a blood-wet dress'.
The parentage of Tisiphone and the other two Erinyes is disputed. They are either the daughters of Gaia by the blood of Ouranos according to Hesiod, Nyx as stated by Aeschyluls, Hades & Persephone mentioned in Orphic Hymns or Poine according to Valerius Flaccus.
